KDP Document Cleanup Checklist Before You Upload Your Book

Use this KDP document cleanup checklist to remove AI chat residue, organize chapters, review front and back matter, and export cleaner DOCX and EPUB files.

Clean the draft before you think about upload settings

A KDP-ready document starts before the upload page. If the draft still contains prompt notes, role labels, AI prefaces, Markdown clutter, duplicated paragraphs, or inconsistent spacing, those issues can follow you into DOCX, EPUB, and proof files.

Awtter gives self-publishers a cleanup-first workspace: import the draft, review cleanup candidates, keep the prose you want, and remove the residue that makes a document look unfinished.

Split the document into sections you can inspect

One pasted document is hard to trust. Split front matter, chapters, scenes, notes, and back matter into Binder sections so every part of the book has a clear place and a clear export setting.

That structure matters when you are checking chapter order, copyright pages, acknowledgments, bonus material, author notes, or anything that should stay in the project but not ship in the final book.

Run a preview-first cleanup pass

Before export, look for the repeated problems that show up in AI-assisted and heavily revised drafts: User and Assistant labels, lines like here is the chapter, Markdown heading marks, orphan lines, repeated setup, and inconsistent paragraph spacing.

Awtter's manual cleanup tools support find and replace, batch rules, paragraph cleanup, block cleanup, match case, whole word matching, and line capture above and below the result so you can inspect changes before applying them.

Export DOCX and EPUB from one reviewed source

KDP workflows commonly require checking a DOCX upload, testing an EPUB, and keeping backup copies for later revisions. Generating those files from one organized source reduces the chance that one format contains old text while another format contains the final version.

Use Awtter's export readiness checklist before downloading files. Confirm Trash is omitted, excluded sections stay private, included sections follow Binder order, and the project title is set before you review the final DOCX or EPUB.
