Look for reviewable AI document cleanup
AI drafts have predictable artifacts, but automatic deletion without review is risky. A cleanup tool should support find and replace, whole-word matching, case controls, paragraph rules, line capture, block removal, and a preview of each proposed change. Authors should be able to keep a match, remove it, or apply a rule selectively.

Require a real chapter and section model

Compare export formats by workflow, not by logo count
DOCX supports editorial collaboration, EPUB supports reflowable ebooks, PDF supports fixed-layout proofing, and TXT or Markdown supports portable source. Software that lists many formats should also explain how the same Binder order, headings, and inclusions reach each file.
Compile presets make multi-format export repeatable. A preset should remember which sections are included, where page breaks occur, whether a table of contents is generated, and which metadata belongs in the output. Unlimited exports are helpful because proofing normally requires several cycles.
Evaluate privacy, ownership, and portability
Writers place unpublished work, client material, research, and personal notes in their tools. Review where projects are stored, how accounts are secured, whether content is used for model training, and how data can be exported or deleted. Marketing language should not replace a clear privacy policy.
Portability protects authors from lock-in. At minimum, the finished document and useful source formats should be exportable. Project backups are even better because they preserve structure, notes, and settings for later recovery.
Test the software with a messy real draft

Score the trial against a written checklist instead of relying on first impressions. Record how long import takes, whether chapter detection is accurate, how clearly cleanup previews show context, whether undo or recovery works, and how many manual repairs the exported files need.
